The first centurion saw himself as unworthy. The first centurion trusted Jesus could cure. The first centurion addressed Jesus as ‘Lord’. Matthew 8: 5And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. The first centurion’s encounter with Jesus was recorded by both Matthew and Luke. Most centurions commanded groups of centuries of around 100 men but senior centurions commanded cohorts or took senior staff roles in their legion. The gospel books record two Roman centurions and their encounters with Jesus Christ.Ī centurion was a professional officer of the Roman army.
